Statement from mary-anne thomas

I’m pleased to see the Government is taking strong action to support our local CFA volunteers by enshrining their independence in law and enabling them to protect our community as they have always done.

At the same time, the Andrews Labor Government is delivering long-awaited presumptive rights to cancer compensation for volunteer firefighters – rights which were denied by the previous Liberal Government.

Alongside the framework set out in the Fire Services Statement, I’m also pleased our volunteer brigades will have access to the funds they need to strengthen recruitment, training, support and leadership as well as much needed upgrades and station rebuilds.

I’ve spoken with several Captains from our local CFA’s who say this announcement makes sense and I look forward to working closely with brigades and volunteers as part of ongoing consultation to build a better, stronger fire service that keeps pace with the needs of our community.
