Lou bennett inducted to honour roll for women

Malmsbury resident and Yorta Yorta woman, Dr Lou Bennett, was one of 25 women inducted onto the 2017 Victorian Honour Roll for Women for her contributions and achievements as a musician and performer.

Dr Bennett was one of the co-founders of both Tiddas and the Black Arm Band, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts company. She also completed a PhD on the importance of Aboriginal languages for the arts community. Ms Thomas said, "Dr Lou Bennett is a music legend, as a performer in Tiddas, and through her involvement in the Black Arm Band as performer and artistic director. I am delighted that her achievements and contributions have been recognised through the Victorian Women’s Honour Roll."

Each year, the Honour Roll celebrates exceptional women in Victoria who have made significant and lasting contributions to their local community, the nation or the world. 2017 inductees join more than 600 remarkable women named in in the Honour Roll since it commenced in 2001.

This year an Ambassadors and Alumni program will be launched, expanding the platform of these women beyond a ceremonial event once a year. This program will be an opportunity to bring together these women – and the communities they represent – to raise the profile of women’s leadership in Victoria.

"Too often, women’s achievements and contributions are not recognised, despite leaving a lasting impact on their communities. These women have changed lives and the Victorian Honour Roll pays homage to their work," Ms Thomas added.
