SAFER ROADS FOR ROMSEY
Drivers in Romsey can look forward to safer roads as the Andrews Labor Government launches the biggest regional road maintenance blitz Victoria has ever seen.
The Victorian Budget 2018/19 allocates $941 million to get on with the job of fixing Victoria’s regional road network, including a massive maintenance uplift for central Victoria.
These works will include the building of a new roundabout and improved pedestrian access at the intersection of Main Street and Barry Street in Romsey.
This project comes after several years of campaigning by the Romsey community and the Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas.
In another win for Romsey, pedestrian lights will be installed on Main Street outside of the Romsey IGA, between Murphy Street and Stawell Street, to cater for the large numbers of people that use this shopping precinct.
There is currently no formal crossing for pedestrians on Main Street, with people forced to cross the busy road without the protection of pedestrian lights.
These investments are in addition to the major safety upgrades currently being undertaken on Melbourne-Lancefield Road, which was identified by the TAC as one of Victoria’s worst regional roads.
Across the state more than 1,000km of roads will be repaired, resurfaced or rebuilt as a part of the Victorian Budget 2018/19.
It’s not just the key arterials that are set for an upgrade, local councils will be able to apply to the new $100 million Fixing Country Roads fund, to get the support they need to fix their local roads.
To oversee this massive investment, the Labor Government will establish Regional Roads Victoria (RRV), a division of VicRoads, based in Ballarat, with staff in regional centres across the state.
Led by a Chief Regional Roads Officer, RRV will have the sole focus of giving country communities roads they can rely on.
