Daylesford-malmsbury road upgrade improves safety

Significant upgrades to the Daylesford-Malmsbury Road are providing a safer and smoother journey for drivers, following the completion of $2.6 million of works on the stretch of road.

The works saw 5.3 kilometres of deteriorated road from Drummond to Malmsbury rebuilt. The existing road surface was stabilised and compacted and a new, strong crushed road base layer was constructed before resurfacing ensured a long-lasting and safe surface.

Around 2,400 vehicles use Daylesford-Malmsbury Road each day, with around 200 of those heavy vehicles. The increase in the strength of the road will now better cater for heavy vehicles.

Works to rebuild this section of road started in mid-October 2017.

The Andrews Labor Government has doubled its spending on road maintenance and rehabilitation this year. In the coming months VicRoads will be taking on more regional road repair projects than it has in decades.

The 2017/18 Victorian Budget allocated $556 million to road maintenance, upgrading more bridges and constructing new bypasses. There was also $49 million for upgrades to 23 major country roads and $40 million for upgrades to 17 bridges.

More than 850 kilometres of deteriorating roads in regional Victoria will benefit from a $260 million maintenance boost for repair and resurfacing this year alone.

Among the key issues identified in VicRoads Country Roads, Your Insights, Our Actions report was the need for improved road maintenance, increased road safety and better connection to jobs and services that support tourism, freight and regional economies.
