Planning for a safer intersection in new gisborne

The communities of Gisborne and New Gisborne are one step closer to a safer intersection at Station Road and Saunders Road.

As a result of funding secured by State Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas in the 2017 / 2018 Budget, VicRoads is currently preparing a business case for the second stage of the Station Road upgrade which will propose new traffic lights and road widening at the Saunders Road intersection.

Ms Thomas will now be working to secure funding for the upgrades.

"There is no doubt we need a safer traffic management solution at this intersection, that’s why I advocated for money for the business plan, and why I will push for the funding to make this plan a reality" she said.

The business case will also propose on-road bike lanes and improvements to the shared paths near the intersection.

A dedicated right-turn lane for vehicles turning from Station Road into Saunders Road will also assist trucks accessing New Gisborne’s industrial precinct and left-turn slip lanes will help vehicles turn into and out of Saunders Road.

The first stage of the Station Road upgrade, which was recently completed, saw two new roundabouts constructed at the Calder Freeway Interchange. "Station Road is a heavy vehicle route, and with the local primary school, early learning centre and aged care facility nearby – traffic lights will provide a safer crossing for pedestrians" said Mary-Anne Thomas.

VicRoads will now continue to finalise the business case for the second stage of the upgrade, which is part of the Victorian Government’s $20 million Planning our Future package
