New starting gates improve safety at kyneton racecourse

Jockeys and horses training at the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club will be safer, thanks to a $114,000 upgrade to the barrier starting gates.

The Andrews Labor Government will contribute more than $57,000 towards the new mechanical gates, courtesy of its Victorian Racing Industry Fund. Racing Victoria is also contributing more than $56,000 towards refurbishment.

The existing barrier starting gates are more than 20 years old and in need of urgent replacement.

The upgrade will see new gates installed for the mobile barrier’s 16 stalls and is expected to be operational by December this year.

The gates will meet improved safety designs, including full padding on the gates, divisions and platforms, an overhead pull-up bar for riders, and an automated mechanical starting system.

The racing industry in the Loddon region generates more than $166 million for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 1640 full-time equivalent jobs locally.
