Macedon roads get safety boost

The Andrews Labor Government is boosting safety by investing more than $926,000 in three road upgrades across the region.

Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas welcomed the safety upgrades on Kyneton-Trentham, Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne and Mt Macedon Roads.

Kyneton-Trentham Road and Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road will see the curves of the roads targeted with a $389,000 upgrade.

Work will include the installation of new guide posts, centrelines and reflective raised pavement markers, along with two sections of wire rope barrier for Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road and new speed advisory signs for Kyneton-Trentham Road.

Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road is a key north-south route, particularly for freight vehicles travelling between Geelong and northern Victoria, with 3,100 vehicles travelling on the road daily.

Motorists have been failing to negotiate curves on these roads with 16 crashes on Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road and three on Kyneton-Trentham Road occurring over the past 5 years. Of these crashes, 15 were attributable to curves.

Mt Macedon Road between Gisborne and Hanging Rock will receive a $537,000 road safety investment making the road safer and easier to navigate for tourists and locals.

This key tourist route carries thousands of visitors to the area every year and with the road winding through bushland, motorists unfamiliar with the road can fail to safetly negotiate its cuves.

The upgrade will make the roads curves more noticeable to motorists and the improvements will include new curve warning signs and the installation of hundreds of reflective road markers.

The road has seen 11 crashes in the past five years as a result of drivers failing to safely negotiate the curves, resulting in 14 serious injuries and one fatality.

The projects will be delivered by VicRoads as part of the Safe System Road Infrastructure Program, funded by the Transport Accident Commission to support projects across Victoria that achieve specific and immediate safety benefits.

Works on these three important locations are due to start shortly.
