Grants giving young families a great start

The Andrews Labor Government is helping young parents and carers in New Gisborne by supporting a new community playgroup for parents aged 25 and under.

Approximately 90 families attend the New Gisborne Playgroup which provides four two-hour sessions a day, five days a week.

Zoe Hall, Vice President of the playgroup said "Having a specific group for young parents will make it easier for this often vulnerable group to have a safe, supportive space to connect"

Initially, the group members will be drawn from the local "Young Parents Connection program", run through the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Maternal and Child Health service. Project Officer, Molly Peterson will work with the New Gisborne Playgroup to help them establish the group and get it running independently.

The Great Start Community Playgroup grants will help the New Gisborne Playgroup cover set-up fees as well as stock up on toys, play equipment, books and other resources that can be used by families.

The $50,000 fund supports the establishment of community playgroups across the state. Families in rural and regional areas were encouraged to apply. Playgroups help new parents connect with one another, enabling them to learn from and support each other as their children grow.

More than 40,000 children and 30,000 families participate in playgroups in Victoria each year.

Young parents who are interested in being involved in the New Gisborne Playgroup or other activities that form part of the Young Parent Connection Project are encouraged to contact Molly Peterson on 5422 0252 or 0487 700 343. Parents can also speak to their Maternal and Child Health nurse to find out more about the YPC project.

The Government is making Victoria the Education State – this begins with giving every child a strong start in life. The Great Start Community Playgroup Fund is administered by Playgroup Victoria.
